Commercial Line of Credit: No Personal Guarantee Options

A personal guarantee makes the business owner personally responsible for repaying the credit facility if the business cannot. Some commercial lines of credit are available without this requirement, but they are less common, have stricter eligibility criteria, and often carry higher rates or lower limits than guaranteed facilities.

Why lenders require personal guarantees

A personal guarantee provides the lender with recourse to the owner's personal assets — home equity, savings, investments — in addition to business assets. For small businesses (especially LLCs and S-Corps with limited balance sheets), the personal guarantee is often the primary additional security the lender has.

When no-PG facilities are available

No-personal-guarantee commercial credit is most accessible for businesses with strong stand-alone credit profiles: established business credit history (several years of on-time payments on business credit), strong business revenue and balance sheet, low or no existing debt, and operating in a low-risk industry.

Corporate credit cards as an alternative

Corporate credit cards — as opposed to small business credit cards — are issued to the business entity and typically don't require a personal guarantee. They operate on revolving credit principles similar to a line of credit but with different features, limits, and fee structures.

Cost and trade-offs

No-PG facilities typically carry higher rates than personally-guaranteed alternatives, lower initial limits, and more restrictive draw and repayment terms. The benefit is preserving separation between personal and business finances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an LLC get a line of credit without a personal guarantee?
Technically yes, but in practice most lenders require a personal guarantee for small business LLCs unless the business has a strong standalone credit profile and substantial assets. Building business credit and assets over time is the most reliable path to no-PG credit.
